EVENTS

Free pet microchipping: Haven will offer free pet microchipping from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 28, at Vashon Dance Academy, 17645 100th Ave SW, near IGA. The “Stars, Stripes and Microchip” event is intended to help reunite pets with owners if they run off during Fourth of July fireworks. No appointment is needed, and walk-ups are welcome, though pre-registration is encouraged at www.havenrescue.org/chip

Vashon Bike Club ride: Vashon Bike Club’s June ride will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 27, at Snapdragon Bakery. The 14.9-mile route loops around the west side of Vashon, with 1,692 feet of elevation gain and an optional Burma Road challenge. Riders will return Uptown for coffee and brunch at Snapdragon. Helmets are required, and riders must be 18 or older. E-bikes are welcome. More information is available on the Vashon Park District website.

Thunderbird Treatment Center tours: Seattle Indian Health Board will offer public tours of its nearly completed Thunderbird Treatment Center, slated to open later this summer at 15333 Vashon Highway SW. Tours will be held four times daily on June 27, June 29, June 30, July 1, July 6, July 8 and July 9, with up to 20 people per tour. The 92-bed center will provide 45-day inpatient substance use disorder treatment for Native and non-Native clients, blending traditional healing practices with clinical care. Palestine in Person: Vashon for Palestine will host “Palestine in Person” at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 27, in the meeting room at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 15420 Vashon Highway SW. The event will feature firsthand accounts from international volunteers who participated in the olive harvest in Palestine, as well as Vashon residents who have worked and volunteered there. Palestinian olive oil, soap and spices will be available for sale, with snacks and beverages provided. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Brown Briefly: Vashon Strawberry Festival lead planners Lynann Politte and Samantha Burdman will join Brown Briefly at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 30, on Voice of Vashon, 101.9 FM, to discuss preparations for the annual festival. Hosts Craig Beles, Truman O’Brien, Amy Drayer, Bruce Haulman and Kevin Jones will ask about scheduled music, vendors, food, the beverage garden, parades, the car show and early plans for next year’s festival. The show also streams at voiceofvashon.org and on the VoV mobile app.

Wednesday run club: Flostate Running sponsors a free run club at 6 p.m. every Wednesday, generally meeting at the Village Green. Runners follow a roughly 3-mile loop into Island Center Forest, with an option to extend to 5 miles. All ages and paces are welcome, with different pace groups available. On the fourth Wednesday of each month, the group meets at the Vashon High School track for a speed workout. More information at flostaterunning.com.

Help wanted: Vashon Park District is hiring part-time lifeguards for the Vashon Community Pool. Applicants must have Red Cross lifeguard certification. Positions are up to 17 hours per week, with the possibility of more hours in summer, including morning, afternoon and weekend shifts.

Pay is $19.82 to $22.30 per hour depending on experience, and ferry fare reimbursement is available for qualified off-island applicants. The application deadline is June 30. For an application and full job description, email dhinzh@vashonparks.org

Eagles flea market: The Vashon Eagles will host its annual flea market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, with music, food and vendor booths. Booth reservations are due by July 15. Free community dinners: Free community dinners are served Mondays through Fridays from 5 to 5:30 p.m. at Vashon Presbyterian Church, 17708 Vashon Hwy SW, hosted by the Interfaith Council to Prevent Homelessness.

VASHON LIBRARY

Summer Reading launch party: The Vashon Library will host a Summer Reading launch party from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 27, with games, crafts, face painting, a “wheel of fun,” s’mores cookie treats and a performance by the Vashon Community Street Band. Registration is not required. The program is supported by the King County Library System Foundation and Vashon Friends of the Library.

SENIOR CENTER

Enjoy a hot lunch at noon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and the following activities throughout the week at the Vashon Senior Center, 10004 SW Bank Road, unless noted otherwise.

VCA trip: The senior center will visit Vashon Center for the Arts at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, June 25, for a viewing of Singer, the monumental whale sculpture in the atrium, and Deep Water Dialogues: Art Beneath the Surface, a group exhibition in the gallery. Call the center for reservations and transportation information.

End-of-life series: Jane Neubauer will lead the final end-of-life planning talk of 2026 at 1 p.m. Friday, June 26, focused on legacy, letters to loved ones and obituaries. The session will also cover unfinished conversations, digital fiduciaries, end-of-life care circles and updating key legal and health care documents.

Song bath: Members of the Vashon Threshold Choir will offer a song bath from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday, June 26, following the end-of-life talk, for anyone seeking support and upliftment.

Breakfast at the Eagles: A senior center group breakfast will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday, June 28, at the Vashon Eagles. Breakfast prices range from $7 to $16, with coffee for $2 and free refills. To request a ride on the senior center bus, contact Kathleen by June 25.

Word Play: Vashon poet Margaret Roncone will lead Word Play at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, and Wednesday, July 22, focusing on writing and sharing stories and life experiences.

FUN Committee meeting: The FUN Committee will meet at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, July 1. Anyone interested in helping plan activities for the senior center is welcome to attend.

Holiday closure: The senior center will be closed Friday, July 3, in observance of Independence Day, with no lunch or daytime programs. The Photo Club will still host a First Friday event from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

PUBLIC MEETINGS

Vashon-Maury Community Council: The council holds regular in-person meetings on the third Thursday of the month. Visit v-mcc.org. The social mixer begins at 6:30 pm, followed by the council meeting from 7:00–9:00 pm.

Water District 19: Usually holds regular board meetings on the second Tuesday of the month at the district’s board room at 17630 100th Ave SW. Visit water19.com.

Vashon Health Care District: Holds regular meetings the fourth Thursday of the month at Vashon Presbyterian Church at 6 p.m., 17708 Vashon Hwy SW, and on Zoom. Visit vashonhealthcare.org.

Vashon Island School District: The board holds regular meetings on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month, at Chautauqua Elementary School, Room 302, 9309 SW Cemetery Road. Visit vashonsd.org.

Vashon Island Fire & Rescue: VIFR’s board typically meets on the fourth Wednesday evening of each month. Visit vifr.org.
