This weekend and next, nearly 50 artists in 23 studios and galleries will open their doors for curious art lovers to take a peek into their work-a-day world during the Vashon Island Art Studio Tour, Spring 2017.
The tour will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, May 6 and 7, and 13 and 14. Artwork created by island artists will include a wide array of media.
At Port Vashon Studio, on the island’s north end, see Jesse Johnson’s portraits of famous poets made out of their words.
Off Vashon Highway, visit Empty Nest Studio, Brian Brenno Blown Glass, Falcorations Odyssey and Kristen Reitz-Green’s studio.
On the east side of the island, WabiSabi Studios offers Asian inspired Jizo sculpture, concrete and mosaics, suited for an outdoor sanctuary. The artist will be on hand to demonstrate the intricate process.
On the west side, the Fletcher Studio Gang (Terri Fletcher, Elaine Summers, Stephanie Harlan, Karen Hust, Vicki Browne and Joan Fritz) work with mosaic tiles, stick critters, tiny paintings, life-like felted birds and more. The stop includes a featured presentation of a wood-fired pizza oven whimsically covered with mosaic and tile, designed by Summers and tile artist Nadine Edelstein.
Find unique pottery created for everyday use at Liz Lewis Pottery and Friends, and at S. Marotta Pottery.
In town, stop by Hinge Gallery to see oil paintings, prints and collages; Pam Ingalls’ paintings at The Hardware Store Restaurant; and the work of many artists at Heron’s Nest Gallery and VCA’s Koch Gallery.
On Maury Island, see Valerie Wilson’s still life photography; mosaics by Penny Grist; and paintings plus metal sculptures by Ilse, Hartmut and Gunter Reimnitz at their studio.
Waterworks Studio will celebrate Mother’s Day and show artwork by 10 artists — from altars, ceramics, photography, jewelry and wearable art to woodwork.
Dockton Pottery Studio will show sheep stools by Sonja Bergstrom, photography by Lori Kay, clocks by Pascale Judet, metalwork by Chris Lemmen, pottery by Gale Lurie and glass by Terry Lemmen.
Find sterling/gemstone jewelry at Zuzko Jewelry; sterling silver musical bells at GRB Bells; and eclectic leather and mixed metal jewelry at Lisa Betz Mosaic Art and Jewelry.
The tour maps/brochures are available at island businesses, the studios and at vashonislandartstudiotour.com.
