Draw colorful local characters
This spring, the Thursday Night Drawing Session at the Grange Hall will have a colorful array of fully clothed characters for local artists of all ages. On March 31, Sue Evans will pose in evening gowns. On April 7, the “Peacewerks” trio will pose in tie-dyed clothes. On April 14, Jason Everett will pose in his firefighter’s bunker outfit. Sessions take place from 6 to 9 p.m. The cost is $15 per session or $100 for eight sessions. Bring your own supplies. For information, call William Forrester at 567-4548.
A Beatles-themed benefit is back
More than 30 Island musicians will take part in people-powered fundraising for the Backbone Campaign at 8 p.m. Friday, April 1, when Red Bicycle Bistro will echo with the sounds of songs by The Beatles. The benefit will raise money for the well-known activist organization, which in recent months has organized for change on Vashon and in Seattle, Olympia and out of state. Backbone’s “artful activism” trainings are scheduled soon for Chicago and Los Angeles. Closer to home, the organization is about to launch a campaign for a solar energy program at Chautauqua Elementary School that would provide free electricity to the school district. Friday night’s benefit is part of an annual tradition where Island musicians come together to play the songs of one or two particular artists to benefit the Backbone Campaign. The tradition started several years ago with an evening of Beatles music. Friday’s benefit will be the first-ever repeat of that theme. There is a suggested donation of $20, and advance tickets are available at www.brownpapertickets.org.
