Vashon Island Pet Protectors is learning new tricks. The nonprofit will hold its first online auction — Throw Us a Bone — in lieu of its annual Fur Ball.

When the auction had to be cancelled several months ago, VIPP’s volunteers didn’t roll over; instead they rallied to meet the organization’s fundraising goals.

Throw Us a Bone will open Friday, Nov. 10, and run through Sunday, Dec. 3. A preview party will held at the Fuller Store from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Featuring hundreds of items that range from artwork by Art Hansen, Pam Ingalls, Jean Emmons and Morgan Brig among others, to a variety of vacations, including Rancho Mirage and Oceanside, California, the auction will also include pet-lover gift baskets and the popular buy-it-now board.

VIPP’s annual Fur Ball typically garners $100,000, about 40 percent of the operating budget, and the organization has set a goal of $125,000 for the online auction. VIPP invites all islanders to support them.

“In this time of serious need — you’ll be helping us care for and rescue hundreds of cats and dogs in the year to come. A chorus of meows and woofs and more will thank you,” VIPP said in a press release.
