One of Vashon’s own will appear on the big screen at the Vashon Theatre next week as part of the Her Story Film Festival Showcase.

The showcase features “Behind Closed Hearts,” which stars India Everett. Everett, who now lives in Los Angeles, grew up on Vashon and has a long history with the island arts community. The showcase also features four other short films Everett helped select; they range in length from 3 to 8 minutes.

“Behind Closed Hearts,” which filmmaker Anthony DiBortolo described as a short thriller that depicts a brief snapshot of domestic violence and dysfunctional love, is the longest of the films at under 9 minutes.

Most of the films to be shown were written and directed by women, and DiBortolo said they all show “stories of women navigating the turbulent waters of sexual harassment and domestic violence.”

Everett and DiBartolo say they chose the island for the showcase debut because it is Everett’s hometown and because of the community’s strong support of the arts.

“There are more art galleries per capita than bars on the island, and the century-old theater has seen its fair share of unique performances and shows,” their recent press release said.

The evening’s films have not been rated, and some sexually suggestive and violent situations are portrayed; parental guidance is suggested.

The showcase will include a brief reception with some of the cast and crew from the films. It is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, April 7. Ten percent of the proceeds will be donated to the Times Up movement.
