Ghost Boat Theater sets sail with ‘One Thing After Another’

Ghost Boat Theater, a new Vashon fringe theater company, will launch its inaugural production this weekend with “One Thing After Another,” a fast-paced, farcical adaptation of Homer’s “The Odyssey.”
The one-act play opens Friday, June 26, at the Bruce Black Box Theater at Open Space for Arts & Community. Performances continue through Sunday, June 28.
Written by Jennifer Dice and directed by Steven Sterne, “One Thing After Another” brings action, adventure, comedy and live old-time music to the classic epic. The show features a 10-person ensemble cast of actors and musicians, with live music performed at every show by a band composed entirely of Greek deities.
The production also marks the first show for Ghost Boat Theater, which was founded and is led by Kat Eggleston, Dice and Sterne. The company, which officially launched in November 2025, aims to create theater experiences enriched by live music, with a focus on new works and reimagined classics written by Vashon residents and music curated or composed by local musicians.
In the play, Dice takes on the more than 3,000-year-old epic poem with a new comic lens, keeping the monsters, danger and adventure of “The Odyssey” while adding rapid-fire humor, social commentary and music.
“We are taking a look at political power and how it is won or transferred or given, and a look at the actual value of military heroism, with this play,” Sterne said in a news release. “While it is fast-paced, light-hearted and fun, playwright Jennifer Dice has a fresh and timely perspective, and the production team has embraced the project with gusto.”
Sterne said the production is a shift from his recent work directing Lauren Gunderson’s AI-themed thriller “anthropology,” presented last month by Drama Dock.
“One Thing After Another” is “pure fun — high energy, low tech and 100% human powered,” Sterne said in an email.
The cast includes Natalie Copeland, Kenny Alton, Kevin Brockschmidt, Brooke Osment, Kay Taylor Yelinek, Axel Solirah, Steve Hunter, Kaycie Alanis, Meg Thompson and Maya Solirah.
Natalie Copeland is the musical director. Ramona Rhapsody designed the sets, props and costumes. Robin Nettles designed lighting, Gabriel Dawson is the live sound engineer, and Samantha Sherman is the assistant director and stage manager.
The show includes a seven-headed hydra, a person-devouring Cyclops, alluring Sirens and a storm-tossed ship traveling through treacherous seas. It runs about 75 minutes with no intermission and is appropriate for all ages.
Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 26; 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 27; and 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Sunday, June 28, at Open Space for Arts and Community, 18870 103rd Ave. SW.
Opening night attendees are invited to stay after the show for a party with complimentary drinks and snacks.
Tickets are available at openspacevashon.com. VIP front-row tickets are $50, standard adult tickets are $25, 4Culture-sponsored tickets are $10, and youth tickets are free. The production is supported by a grant from 4Culture.
