Island Quilt Guild struts its stuff with a big show

Once every two years it happens: The Vashon Quilt Guild offers up a two-day show of traditional and contemporary work either made by hand by its members or culled from their personal collections of vintage quilts.

This year’s show, “Quilted Island Heirlooms,” will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 14 and 15, at the Vashon High School gym. More than 50 quilters have submitted approximately 150 quilts and quilted items for the exhibition and sale.

Island Quilter will have a pop-up fabric store at the event, and other wares of interest to quilters will also be sold. Vendors will include Kai Scissors and a Quilt Guild Mercantile shop.

In addition to the display of quilts, there will be demonstrations of quilting techniques, a display of vintage sewing machines, samples of quilts made for the guild’s charity projects, and raffles and games for children.

To feed hungry quilt lovers, the Vashon Seals Swim Team will hold a fundraising bake sale on Saturday, and the Harbor School will do the same on Sunday.

There is a $5 suggested donation to see the show.
