Music lovers are in for a treat — a trifecta of upcoming concerts filled with the virtuoso performance of a varied repertoire of early, classical and chamber music. These experiences for audiences range from hearing an accomplished string quartet play in an intimate church setting, to a solo concert in the Kay White Hall by a rising piano star, to the chance to soak up the ethereal sounds the Baroque period played on period wind instruments. Sit back, relax and let the concerts carry you away to a place of deep appreciation for the miracle of music played by human hands.

Vashon Chamber Music goes Hungarian

Vashon Chamber Music will wrap its 10th anniversary season with a concert, “A Night in Hungary,” performed at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 22, at Vashon United Methodist Church. The program will feature The Girsky String Quartet and soprano Holly Boaz, and also include Zoltán Kodály’s String Quartet No. 2, and Bartok’s folk songs and String Quartet No. 3. Tickets to the concert, $10 to $25, are available at brownpapertickets.com, and will also be sold at the door.

Albert Cano Smit takes the stage

Albert Cano Smit, a rising piano phenomenon, will play a concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 26, at Vashon Center for the Arts’ Kay White Hall. A lecture, at 6:45 p.m. will precede the concert.

The 22-year old pianist was awarded first prize at the 2017 Walter W. Naumburg Piano Competition. He has performed as a soloist and chamber musician across Europe and America and has been praised for playing “with the maturity of someone three times his age” (CBC Music) and for his “dazzling technical and emotional dexterity and musicianship” (DNA).

Highlights for Smit in the past whirlwind year include his recital debut at Carnegie Hall; appearances at the Wissembourg Festival, Rheingau Musik-Festival; a recital tour of Spain featuring the world premiere of Miquel Oliu’s preludes; a recital debuts at L’Auditori de Barcelona, Herbst Theatre in San Francisco; and concerto debuts with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, OBC and Las Vegas Philharmonic.

Advance tickets to the concert, available at vashoncenterforthearts.org, range in price from $10 to $32. All tickets at the door cost $32. Find out more about Smit, and listen to his playing, at albertcanosmit.com.

Salish Sea Early Music Festival returns to Vashon

The Salish Sea Early Music Festival will present “Baroque Winds,” a concert of rarely-heard chamber music from the 18th century for flute, recorder and oboe, with cello and harpsichord, at noon Thursday, April 25, at Bethel Church.

The concert will include chamber music by German, French and Italian composers Antonio Vivaldi, Joseph Bodin de Boismorter, Fortunato Riedel, Johann Joachim Quantz and Georg Philipp Telemann, and will be performed by specialists on early wind instruments, which are significantly different from their modern counterparts. Players in the ensemble include recorder player Vicki Boeckman, baroque oboist Sand Dalton, baroque flutist Jeffrey Cohan, cellist Caroline Nicolas and harpsichordist Jonathan Oddie.

Admission to the concert is by a suggested donation of $15 to $25; those 18 and younger will be admitted free. More information about the concert and upcoming local performances of the Salish Sea Early Music Festival can be found at salishseafestival.org/vashon.
