Zero Waste Vashon held an electronics recycling drive last weekend outside Vashon High School that resulted in the collection of an estimated 8,700 pounds of material.

Islander Steve Bergman, a member of the organization, said the total haul included 71 cathode-ray tube and large screen TVs as well as desktop computers, VCRs, laptops, printers and cellphones.

He also said that altogether, there were 157 individual drop-offs with materials varying in size, with the largest consisting of two trailer loads of old computers and two office photocopiers.

Will Lockwood, a fellow member, added that for those who missed Zero Waste Vashon’s event, King County will hold a general recycling event that will take electronics on Aug. 10 at the high school.

“When combined with last year’s electronics recycling event, [Zero Waste Vashon] has saved almost 24,000 pounds of island electronics from being landfilled,” he said.
