A beloved island-centric variety show, The Church of Great Rain, will make a comeback at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, at Open Space for Arts & Community.

The original show launched in 2008 at Red Bicycle Bistro & Sushi, drawing 40 or 50 people to its earliest productions. But in time, that modest crowd turned into a standing-room-only mob of almost 600 people who attended the show’s monthly, Sunday afternoon installments at Open Space. The show closed in 2012 when the cast disbanded to explore other opportunities and interests.

The new Church will take much of the same form as the old show, with island talent serving up a series of skits, musicals and monologues. Many of its original cast members, writers and musicians are back in the mix. Familiar names and faces to appear in the cast will include — to name a few — Jeff Hoyt, Cindy Hoyt, Jeanne Dougherty, Janet McAlpin, Jon Whalen, Mik Kuhlman, Lyn McManus, Steffon Moody and Jim Farrell. David Godsey will recreate his role as the Rev. Hunter Davis, the pin-striped, proselytizing host of the show.

The show will also feature a cadre of new cast members, as well as a new band, led by Adam Creighton. Anthony Winkler will serve as artistic director of the rebooted Church.

Jeff Hoyt, who writes much of the show’s comedy material with his wife, Cindy, said that he plans to continue its tradition of mining comedic veins of island humor. An increase in overhead plane noise — a current subject of controversy on the island — might make for rich material for a skit, he said.

Doors for The Church of Great Rain will open at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, at Open Space, for pre-Church socializing, with the performance starting at 4 p.m. Tickets range in price from $15 for general seating to $25 for table seats.
