Pondering what is ‘Enough’

Local author Shauna Ahern will headline “Enough: Vashon Women in Conversation,” from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, at VCA.

The evening is an exploration of issues raised in Ahern’s new book of essays, “Enough: Notes from a Woman Who Has Found It,” which received rave reviews from The Washington Post, the actress and writer Lena Dunham and the author Brené Brown upon its publication last October.

The first half of the evening will take place in VCA’s lobby, filled with Vashon women artists, entrepreneurs and women-centered non-profits. Food from Vashon chefs and cocktails will also be available for sale. The second half of the evening will take place in VCA’s concert hall, where musician Ara Lee James will present the video for her song, “Nasty Women,” and lead the audience in a singing experience. Stories, songs, poems fill stages

A jam-packed slate of concerts, talks and events taking place on Vashon this weekend includes:

“Rise Up, The Hamilton Tribute Band,” performing at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at Vashon Center for the Arts. The performance will include a special appearance by the Vashon Island School District Choir, backing the band on a series of songs. Kindie rock phenom Caspar Babypants playing a free show at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, in the Chautauqua Elementary School multi-purpose room. Donations will be accepted to support Vashon Youth & Family Service’s scholarship programs.

Talks on the Rock, a speaker’s series, continuing with Brian Reed’s presentation about “Birds, Song and Poetry,” at 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, at Vashon Center for the Arts. Get tickets at vashoncenterforthearts.org.

The free, all-ages Annual Storytelling Festival, presented by Vashon Wilderness Program, at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, at Vashon Theatre. Now in its 13th year, the annual event offers nature-based stories told by VWP’s staff, as well as opportunities for audience members of all ages to tell stories or join in interactive group storytelling improv games. Vashon inspires a video

“Ink to Spill,” a band that includes islander Gus Reeves, recently released a Vashon-inspired single and video, “Keys Awaiting” — searchable to islanders on YouTube under “Keys Awaiting – Ink to Spill.” Recorded on Vashon at Reeves’ studio, Gus’s Music Box, the song tells an impressionistic story of how the band was formed. The group, which includes Reeves on lead vocals and guitars, lyricist C’Qauil aka Bob Sauer, bassist Ryan Behling and percussionist Ernie Adams, play music influenced by soul, funk and rhythm and blues. The band’s next single, “Robes On Fire” will be released on Jan. 28.

Rizo performs at Open Space

Singer-sophisticate Rizo will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, at Open Space for Arts & Community.

The New York City-based performer released her second album, “Indigo,” in 2017. She has collaborated with Moby and Reggie Watts, as well as with Yo-Yo Ma on his “Songs of Joy & Peace” album, which won a Grammy Award. The New York Times has called her “a formidable belter who can sustain phrases and notes even when sprawled on her back on a piano and scissoring her legs.”
