Vashon seniors are invited to spend an afternoon at a treasured island spot for much younger folks — Vashon Pirate Camp, a wonderland summer camp operated by islander Tressa Azspiri and her cohort, Barb Adams.
Together, they’re known as Captain Tressa and Barnacle Barb, and they are eager to welcome “Golden Pirates” to the camp from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28.
“This is an opportunity for our Golden Pirates to enjoy the freedom of Vashon Pirate Camp just as our young pirates do,” Azpiri said — instructing all attendees to come dressed as pirates or in clothes that can be torn and tattered into pirate rags.
At the event, Azpiri will share the history of Vashon’s original pirate camp on Maury Island, and describe her current camp activities.
“We’ll begin the afternoon by exploring our fun-filled camp, singing songs and allowing plenty of time to play on the teeter-totter, merry-go-round and swings and explore the pirate ship’s hold, which contains a library of pirate books,” she said.
There will also be a treasure hunt in nearby woods, which are lined with accessible trails. The day will also include refreshments — roasted vegtables and sauses roasted on a campfire.
The fun-filled afternoon is a fundraiser, with all optional donations going to provide scholarships for kids to attend Pirate Camp in 2026.
No pets are allowed at the event, though service dogs are welcome. All attendees should wear walking shoes, expect to be on their feet for most of afternoon, and bring a water bottle.
Vashon Pirate Camp is located at 10800 SW 133rd Street.
