Buy a miracle for kids

“Purchase a Miracle” is Washington state’s premier grocery campaign that benefits Children’s Hospital. This program has raised more than $5.1 million for uncompensated care for the hospital since 1988, helping families who do not have the insurance or personal resources to pay for their child’s medical care.

Vashon Island Children’s Hospital Guild members will be in the grocery stores at the end of this month to hang Purchase a Miracle shelf talkers (labels on shelves of participating products) to support the campaign, which runs from May 1 to June 15. Both Vashon Market and Thriftway have given consent to display these tags on participating products.

In 2007 Children’s Hospital marked its 100th anniversary of caring for sick and injured children. Costs for uncompensated care rose to an unprecedented $65.4 million last year, an increase of $23 million over 2006. With Purchase a Miracle, participating food producers donate a percentage of each purchase to Children’s Hospital. We ask your support to make the campaign a success.

VIPP wants cute pet photos

Vashon Island Pet Protectors (VIPP) needs your adorable pet photos to display in our booth at the Strawberry Festival in July. We’ll proudly show off your pet(s) to the public at the festival. Don’t forget to stop by our booth and vote for your pet at $1 per vote. Bring all your friends, too. The winner is the pet with the most votes in each category: dogs, cats and others (chickens, hamsters, goats, rabbits, etc.). Winners win a gift certificate to Pandora’s Box. Those who participate will be helping VIPP find homes for all the unlucky Island cats and dogs that desperately need them. All proceeds go to pay for veterinary care, spaying and neutering and housing for these animals.

Please bring your photo (one per pet) to Pandora’s Box, e-mail to lguy@centurytel.net or mail to PO Box 13409, Burton, 98013. Be sure to include your name, pet’s name, category, address and phone number. People may enter a pet in all categories. Please note: The deadline for submission is June 13, as we need extra time to print and display photos.
