Letter to the Editor: Play was not offensive to many

I object to the title of Doug Larsen’s letter to the editor (Jan. 5, 2010) criticizing “Nuncrackers,” a play I directed for Drama Dock this past Christmas season. The title read, “Play Was Offensive to Christians,” whereas it should have read, “Play Was Offensive to This Christian.”
The Catholic and other Christian “elitists” that comprised the bulk of the cast didn’t seem to find it “blasphemous,” “contemptuous” or “secular.” I’ve talked with several Christian audience members who said that they were expecting it to be offensive, but thoroughly enjoyed it.
Mr. Larsen’s complaint was the first I’ve heard from talking to many people, Catholic, Christian and otherwise, all of whom who thought the play was a rollicking good time.
I guess that that is the nature of comedy in general and satire in particular — it can be looked at from different sides. And humor, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.
I imagine there are actors and liberals who may have found our previous year’s production of “Inspecting Carol,” a play villifying political correctness, actors and liberals, to be elitist, unfair and discriminatory.
Naah. Probably not.
