Community council

It was established on Vashon in 1935

Thanks for the recent coverage on the community council’s need to find a new home.

The Beachcomber mentioned that the Vashon-Maury Island Community Council is an Unincorporated Area Council and that we receive $10,000 a year from King County.

However, we were not created by King County, as the story says.

The VMICC was established in 1935! When the UAC concept was developed by King County, it was overlaid onto an already-flourishing and vital town hall meeting forum that continues to this day, 74 years later.

Any Islander is welcome to come to our meetings and vote on any issues before the body, always the third Monday evening of the month.

Dog attacks

Other attack stories sought

I have watched with growing concern the letters and articles about dog attacks on humans and livestock in The Beachcomber. As a family with companion animals who accompany us most places, I am worried about the risks to us and the limitations and restrictions we may face as a result of these incidents.

Last weekend, as my husband and I were away for some badly needed R&R, I received a frantic call from our sitter advising us that she and one of our dogs were attacked as they were on an evening walk. We cancelled our reservations for the remainder of the weekend and hurried to the Island to discover a slightly physically injured and terribly psychologically shaken dog sitter and a more badly injured furry friend. Our dog suffered multiple punctures, scratches and assorted injuries costing hundreds of dollars to treat. I cannot thank both our sitter or the staff at Fair Isle enough for their help. Had our sitter not been quick thinking and had a passerby not stopped to help her during the attack, things could have been much worse.

The King County Sheriff’s deputy who took the report was totally unfamiliar with the protocol for these situations but was helpful and accommodating. It was discovered that the dogs involved with the attack had previously attacked at least two other animals and one person, yet they were still allowed to roam and attack this time.

It is unthinkable that nothing has been done to prevent this from happening again by these same animals and owners. I do not blame the dogs. I blame the negligent owners and will not allow this situation go unanswered. I am asking for anyone who was attacked or had an animal attacked by dogs on Cove Road to please contact us and tell your story.
