Leave driftwood on the beach, a reader asks.

NATURE

Leave driftwood on the shore

When I see driftwood being used for construction, art, or firewood I feel sad. Left in nature, driftwood serves a number of roles. One is to help protect shorelines from erosion. What I say on beach walks with my grandchildren as they pick up interesting things is, “If it’s man-made you can take it home, but if it’s nature-made, leave it alone.”
