Levy passed, but new direction is needed

I voted for the park levy. I had signs on my trike saying “Vote for the levy.” I talked with anyone who was interested and asked them to vote for it as well. But I did NOT vote for it, despite what Commissioner Joe Wald may think, because I approve of the direction the current commissioners believe they are taking

I voted for the park levy. I had signs on my trike saying “Vote for the levy.” I talked with anyone who was interested and asked them to vote for it as well. But I did NOT vote for it, despite what Commissioner Joe Wald may think, because I approve of the direction the current commissioners believe they are taking. I voted for the levy because I care about Vashon Park District parks and programs and I’m hopeful we’ll soon have commissioners who will invite islanders to participate in creating a larger vision for the entire district, its parks and programs.

The recent history of the current commissioners has been told often, and in fact a lot of it is available on video if anyone wants to see for him or herself. If the levy vote had been a referendum on the behavior of the current commissioners — particularly those whose positions soon come up for election — I honestly know enough people who, like me, voted yes who’d have voted a resounding no and the levy would have failed.

I realize that those who serve are volunteers, so I don’t mean this to be a personal attack. But honestly, enough is enough. This is a perfect time to give others a chance to guide the district and the amazing resources we have on this island. All we need is about a half-dozen folks — swimmers, rowers, equestrians, ball players of all sorts, skaters, hikers and bikers — to register to run for office right now.
