We wanted to thank you for the in-depth article on the CERT organization, (“As CERT changes hands, volunteers continue to prepare for the worst,” June 17) and we want to thank the 45 volunteers who donated their time and energy to become even better prepared to help their island neighbors in an emergency
Thank you for whomever put the ad in the last Beachcomber reminding us to “Slow down spring newborn” with the drawing of the fawn.
I appreciate The Beachcomber’s decision to share Sierra Linden’s toxicology report. It shattered a dangerous island myth into a thousand painful pieces.
In the May 20 edition, I was pleased to see new names and faces running for public office. Local politics can make a difference for a community. I applaud those that want to put themselves on the line for what can be thankless work.
I would like to address two young women mentioned recently.
Mark A. Goldman, you and I are brothers. You were spot on in your letter about our government and how it operates. (“The government continues to deny our rights and freedoms,” May 27.)
We are writing on behalf of Vashon High School’s student newspaper, asking you to help send our editorial staff to journalism camp this summer.
Thank you, Dr. Elizabeth Archambault, for the conversation starter.(“Don’t be hesitant to start the conversation about sex,” May 5). Let’s lay the full picture of sexuality before young people. Young friends know this: Love is central to sexuality. Lifelong engagement with one person will enrich you more than is imaginable. For the sake of your joy, do not settle for anything less.
To quote Mr. Ameling as he took issue with The Beachcomber’s adjectives: “Did it barely pass? Or did it kick butt 60-40?” (“County certifies final park district levy vote,” May 20).
The current attempt by this administration and others to pass a trade bill, which was conceived and negotiated in secret, is further evidence that freedom itself is on its death bed in America. It is evidence that the U.S. government is not designed or intended to serve the interests of most citizens, but rather is designed and dedicated to serving the interests of an elite few who have no real interest in seeking or preserving other people’s basic rights, freedom or justice for all.
At the risk of being incorrect, it is perhaps worthwhile to remember that by far the single most significant contribution of STEM (science, technology, engineer and math) has been nuclear technology
It’s time again to start writing our members of Congress about GMO labeling laws. There’s a bill before Congress, HR1599, and if it passes, states will lose the right to pass GMO labeling laws. This bill would keep people in the dark about GMOs, thus ensuring a growing number of GMO products in our country.
This is a blatant shout-out to our amazingly talented island. Just had to write after this last weekend. Two major productions deserve special recognition. Both are light subjects with seriously competent execution.
