Audubon calendar showcases island photographers’ work, raises money

The photographic work of 15 current or former islanders is being showcased in the Vashon-Maury Island Audubon Society’s 2017 calendar, now on sale, with proceeds benefitting the organization.

Included in the photos are an inquisitive young owl, a killdeer chick near its rocky nest and a flock of cedar waxwings crowning a tree top. All photos of the familiar favorites and seldom-seen birds were taken at Vashon Island ponds, woodlands, backyards and surrounding waters. The photographers are Sherry Bottoms, Greg Bush, Jim Diers, Ann Donahoe, Sarah Driggs, Michael Elenko, Barb Gustafson, Jamie Hatten, Claudia Hollander-Lucas, Rusty Knowler, Harsi Parker, Ray Pfortner, Peter Ray, Ed Swan and Randy Turner.

Calendars can be purchased for $17.25 at the Vashon Bookshop, Thriftway (customer service counter) and online at VashonAudubon.org.

Proceeds from the calendar help support Audubon activities, including a Chautauqua Elementary School fourth-grade educational program, classes for community members, the annual Christmas Bird Count and a Vashon High School scholarship.
