Colorful, creative art featured during August First Friday

Café Luna will show island photographer Peter Ray's new show, "Vashon by Night," for the month of August. Ray's new work is a compilation of digital photographs taken in the early hours, capturing familiar island spots in unfamiliar light. There will be an artist reception from 6 to 8 p.m.

Portland printmaker Kelli MacConnell will display her work at Hastings-Cone Gallery. A champagne reception will also be held.

Photography by Cara Briskman and Tom Conway along with watercolor batik by Marcia McKinzie, will be on display at Heron’s Nest. Greg Martin will provide music.

Hinge Gallery will display Cyra Jane’s Simulacra Series. Simulacra is the study of contextual syntax through the medium of fine ink on bird’s eye maple. Murals made from that maple are woven directly onto the wall. This is the first work that combines her studies in analytical syntax with visual expression. Jane will be at the gallery, and refreshments will be served.

Puget Sound Community Credit Union will show sketches by William Forrester and feature music by lifelong islander Jeff Tucker. Forrester’s sketches consist of 30 years worth of sketching students in class while working as a full-time and substitute teacher. The quick drawings on display are copies of original sketches he has drawn in the classroom, as he has given the originals to students. Forrester said the exhibit is “a record of many tender moments in a turbulent job.”

Also at PSCCU, guitarist Tucker will be joined by his longtime guitar instructor, Daryl Redeker, for an evening of covers and jams.

Raven’s Nest is showing a new jewelry collection called Geometrics. Pieces feature decorative patterns or designs based on geometric shapes that are inspired by Northwest Coast Raven’s Tail. The jewelry is a collaboration between Sue & Israel Shotridge created in sterling silver and copper with added abalone shell.

With brightly colored hair, scars and missing eyes, Patty Roberts’ gothic fairy rag dolls and zombie critters are unique and have individual personalities. Roberts has been a creator for as long as she can remember. Her mother taught her to crochet and use a sewing machine at a very young age. She designs and creates the patterns, sews and constructs the dolls, then hand paints the faces on each one. Her creations will be on display at SAW along with paintings and prints of her crazy critters.

A book-signing and Irish fiddle music will await gallery tourists at Treasure Island.Store owner Marci Christopher’s twin sister, Christi “CJ” Haiduk, will be signing her book, “Mermaid Slippers.” Refreshments and music will be on the store’s porch.

VALISE Gallery will host a two-man art exhibit with Jeff Farnam and Jim Woodring. Seattle artist Farnam gives new life to discarded objects. His show, “Hey found object,” includes colorful characters painted on wood and found objects. Islander Jim Woodring earned an international reputation as a master cartoonist, storyteller and metaphysician. “The World Of Frank” presents his pen-and-ink drawings and prints featuring the iconic cartoon character Frank.

Vashon Intuitive Arts will display Terry Jansen’s “Honored Citizen Series” watercolor portraits.

Eight artists who explore the variety and excitement of paper as it becomes sculptural, flat, transparent, floating and a messenger will display their work at VCA Koch Gallery. Dona Anderson, Mary Ashton, Danielle Bodine, Zia Gipson, Lois James, Dorothy McGuinness, Jean-Marie Tarascio and Sande Wascher-James will be featured in the “Paper Transformed II” exhibition.
