Blue Scholars come to town
The next installment of “Sharing the Stage,” a series that pairs performances by Seattle music acts with those by local teens, will bring the renowned hip-hop duo Blue Scholars to Vashon next week. The Blue Scholars have played more than 400 shows alongside such names as Kanye West, De La Soul, Nas and Common. They’ve also played the main stage at Sasquatch and Bumbershoot, and headlined their own Northwest hip-hop festival. The duo’s Vashon show, with opening acts Cameron Sonju, Qui Martinez, Blueberry Frousting, Pete Evans and student poets, takes place at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, April 22, at the Open Space for Arts & Community. ‘Songs in the Key of V’
Vashon Island Chorale will present “Songs in the Key of V: Celebrating Vashon Composers,” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 21, and 3 p.m. Sunday, April 22. Tickets, $12.50 and $10, are on sale at www.brownpapertickets.com, Vashon Bookshop, Essentials 4 and The Blue Heron. The concert’s repertoire — composed by current and former Islanders as well as relatives of chorale members — will include spirituals, ballads, gospel, jazz, love songs, a square dance romp and a choral soundtrack from a major motion picture.
Flute, viola and guitar
The Salish Sea Early Music Festival will present “1820: Flute, Viola and Guitar,” a rare program of chamber music from the time of Beethoven and Schubert played by Jeffery Cohan, Oleg Timofeyev and Steve Creswell, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 19, at Vashon Methodist Church. Cohan will play an eight-keyed flute made in London in 1820. The Russian seven-string guitar Timofeyev plays is the guitar of choice among some classical musicians in Russia. Violists in Beethoven’s day used a different bow and played using techniques in which Creswell specializes. The suggested donation will be $15 or $20. Those 18 and younger and students are free.
Waterworks does a show
Waterworks Studio, a collective on Maury Island, is gearing up to present a special exhibit featuring the work of 12 local artists. Many of these artists have deepened or rediscovered their creative focus using tools learned in local artist and author Darsie Beck’s “Essential Nature” workshops. The show includes work from veteran artists Bob Horsley, Donna Kaplan and Darsie Beck, as well as work from “Essential Nature” workshop students. The show will be on display at Waterworks Studio, 7012 SW 240th St., from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 20, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 21. On Friday night, there will food and drink.
