Ian Moore, an acclaimed guitarist, singer and songwriter, will rock the Blue Heron this weekend, when he takes the stage with an accomplished band of musicians for a full weekend’s worth of concerts.

Moore will be joined by another Islander, Jason Staczek, on accordion, keyboards and vocals. Barb Antonio will play cello, and Darren Loucas will bring banjo, mandolin, lap steel and vocal to the mix.

It’s the same quartet that played a sold-out show last year at the Blue Heron, prompting the venue to book Moore for a two-night gig this time.

Moore, a Texas transplant who moved to Vashon more than a decade ago, grew up immersed in the fertile Austin music scene of the 1970s and 80s, guided by music-loving parents who introduced him to a wide breadth of musical styles at festivals, clubs and all-night jam sessions.

By the time Moore was a teenager, he was known as a guitar prodigy, and he released his self-titled first album in 1993.

In the years that followed, Moore’s career took such heady turns as touring with Bob Dylan, Joe Ely, ZZ Top and The Rolling Stones, as well as appearing in the role of Randy Horsefeathers in Billy Bob Thornton’s film, “Sling Blade.”

He also toured widely before eventually making the move to the Pacific Northwest.

“Moving up to Seattle was really interesting and cool as well as scary,” Moore explained in a biography posted on his Web site, www.ianmoore.com.

“I was like, okay, I’m going to take the biggest crutch that I have — I was an Austin celebrity; every piece of press that people wrote about me said ‘Austin, Texas guitar player’ — and toss it aside,” Moore wrote.

But Moore’s time on Vashon has continued to inform his broad musical ecumenism and insatiable creative spirit.

During his years on the Island, Moore has recorded five albums, and he is currently finishing a new CD, “El Sonido Nuevo,” which is slated to be released on Justice Records this spring.

He described the album as classic rock with diverse influences including Electric Light Orchestra, The Byrds, Townes Van Zandt and others.

He’s also kept up a busy touring schedule, which most recently took him to New York City to play with legendary guitarist Roky Erickson, who pioneered the psychedelic rock genre.

Moore also recently toured throughout Oklahoma and Texas with his band, the Lossy Coils.

But this weekend, he’ll be able to luxuriate in the warmth of a hometown crowd, where many audience members personally know Moore, his wife Joleen McCauley, and their two young sons.

“We look forward to playing the Blue Heron and playing music for our friends on Vashon,” Moore said.

Ian Moore and Friends will play concerts at the Blue Heron at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Jan. 22 and 23.

The shows will feature Moore on guitar and vocals, with accompaniment on accordion, keyboards, cello, mandolin, lap steel and vocals.
