Island musicians in the spotlight on new album

Islanders will hear old and new favorite artists — including songs from Trolls Cottage, Danny Newcomb, Carter Castle, Maijah and many others.

Vashon Events recently released its fourth CD showcasing island musicians.

In the 11 songs on “Vashon Calling IV,” islanders will hear old and new favorite artists — including songs from Trolls Cottage, Danny Newcomb, Carter Castle, Maijah and many others.

Pete Welch and Allison Shirk, of Vashon Events, say they envisioned this project as an opportunity to highlight musicians who live on Vashon and to “cross-pollinate” audiences for the benefit of the featured artists. Other talented islanders also played an important role in creating the CD: Martin Feveyear mastered it, and Terry Donnelly shot the cover photograph.

“We hope that as you listen to this album, you’ll hear what we hear – an incredible array of styles and personal stories that reflect Vashon Island itself – what it means to live here, create art here, the personal relationships, the connection to the environment, and the journey of life itself, reflected from the perspective of individuals living on a small island in the Puget Sound,” Welch and Shirk wrote in a recent news release about the album.

Welch and Shirk also encouraged listeners to continue to support the artists by buying other music from them.

The full list of musicians featured on the CD is Trolls Cottage, Todd Zimberg, Maijah, Lonesome & Pine, Maggie Laird, Basement Tuesdays, Danny Newcomb, Carter Castle, Saint Ophelia, Julia Mark and Wilson Abbott.

Proceeds from the CD support Vashon Events, a nonprofit aimed at enriching Vashon’s cultural scene in myriad ways, including providing a musical instrument library, offering a registry of musicians who teach lessons, and maintaining a website highlighting all the upcoming arts and cultural events on Vashon.

“Vashon Calling IV” is available at vashonevents.org for $15; all four CDs in the “Vashon Calling” series are available for $45. A download option will also be available soon.
