Hastings-Cone Gallery will feature paintings by Jodi Brown. The island artist works as a window trim and event designer at Nordstrom. She is captivated by shared images in American culture that become a deliberately constructed narrative not just for celebrities, but for all who use social media. Paintings in her show, “Banalogous,” explore the relationship between complex, experiential reality and contrived, simplistic, cultural fantasy.

Raven’s Nest’s new show, “Spirit of the Killer Whale, Wolf of the Sea,” will exhibit work by multiple artists in several mediums — sculpture, limited edition prints, cards, paddles, drums, jewelry and apparel — all featuring the Orca, the Northwest Coast Native symbol of mysticism, strength, dignity, prosperity and longevity. The video “Keet Shagoon,” which tells the Tlingit origin story of the killer whale, will be shown Friday at the gallery.

SAW will feature Mary Margaret Briggs’ textile designs, monotypes and collage panels. Briggs is known for monotypes printed with foliage she cuts from her Vashon garden. Her artwork is influenced by the years she spent traveling and living in Asia and by the verdant beauty of her island home.

VALISE Gallery will exhibit work by member artist Sharon Shaver and guest artist from Columbia City, Ruth Hooper, in a show called “Living It Up.” Shaver paints colorful acrylic images of women, squirrels, mice, seagulls, bears, dogs, fish and cats. Hooper will show her series of dance paintings and paper cuts, which are based on the art of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), as well as her Magic Cat series.

Vashon Allied Arts Gallery will feature photographs by island photographer Terry Donnelly and glazed stoneware sculptures by Seattle artist David Traylor. “Expressions of Cuba” is a series of portraits Donnelly shot of people in Havana’s Old Town, while on a trip to Cuba last spring. Traylor’s ceramic sculptures appear to be alive with the sense of motion and movement, which he creates by attaching tiny elements to the clay forms.

In a show with the theme of flower power, Vashon Community Care will exhibit quilts from the Vashon Quilt Club.

Vashon Intuitive Arts will show mixed media work by Casey Westphal.
