From Sarajevo to Vashon

Amir Beso will perform a mix of Balkan, gypsy and flamenco music in a free, all-ages show at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, at Red Bicycle Bistro. Seattle Times critic Misha Berson called Beso “Bosnia’s answer to Jimi Hendrix.”

Roots and folk at the Bike

Sidestreet Reny, a blues, roots and folk music duo, will play a free show at 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at Red Bicycle Bistro. Melodie Trottier, a local musician, will open.

Doo-wop twang at Luna

The electric folk duo Melissa Ruth and Johnny Leal will play a free show of what they call “doo-wop twang” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at Café Luna. Ruth has toured the western United States and performed at regional music festivals.

World Music Fest in Burton

Celebrate music and dance at Vashon Allied Arts’ World Music Festival, set for 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at Camp Burton. Acts will include the Peruvian percussion and dance group DE CajóN Project, the African dance and drum group Message from Guinea and the Brazilian band Samba Assim. Tickets are $10 to $15 and are on sale at the Blue Heron, Books by the Way, Heron’s Nest, www.brownpapertickets.com and, on the day of the event, at Camp Burton.

Blues on the Village Green

Piedmont Blues, a duo comprised of Phil Wiggins and Orville Johnson, will perform a free concert presented by Vashon Folkdancers and Vashon Park District at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 9, at the Village Green. Wiggins began his musical career with some of Washington, D.C.’s leading blues artists. For many years he was part of the Cephas & Wiggins harmonica-guitar duo. Currently, he serves as director of Centrum’s annual blues week in Port Townsend. Johnson acquired his love of singing in the fundamentalist Pentecostal church he attended as a child. He is a singer, instrumentalist, record producer, songwriter, session player, guitar player and dobro player.
