A lively night of old-fashioned fun will take place this weekend, when Islanders can kick up their heels at a square dance called by a professional caller.

The Ciderfest event, slated for 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at Open Space for Arts and Community, is being hosted by Poultry in Motion, a local band that includes nine players on banjo, fiddle, dobro, mandolin, squeezebox and more.

The gala evening will also feature food, beer, wine and cider, auction items, a raffle and a play area for children.

Proceeds from ticket sales — $5 for children younger than 18, $10 for adults, or $20 for a family — will benefit causes, including Rotary, Vashon Youth & Family Services, Kiwanis and others. Tickets are available in advance by calling 463-2718 and will also be sold at the door.

Gib Dammann, a drummer and vocalist with the band, said he hopes people will “come out and learn to square dance just like in the old days before iPods and satellite disks.”

Dammann is especially excited that the dances will be called by Eddie Harry, a seasoned professional who has been working regionally since he was 10 years old. Harry will bring a group of square dancers with him to the event.
