Summer gets a kick-start with concerts and entertainment events galore

Rumor Has It plays at the park

The all-Island “super group” Rumor Has It will launch Vashon Allied Arts’ and Vashon Park District’s free Summer in the Park Series from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 17, at Ober Park. The band plays upbeat, danceable music, and includes Roger Taylor, Paul Colwell, Sarah Perlman, Steve Amsden, Kevin Almeida, Larry Lawson and Todd Zimberg. Guest vocalist Gen Amsden will sing at the Ober Park show.

Bike brings Handful of Luvin’ and Cargo Jam

Red Bicycle Bistro’s weekend shows will start with a concert by Handful of Luvin’ at 9:30 p.m., Friday, June 18. The band is a rock quartet featuring a classically trained violinist. Their set list includes a blend of folk-rock, reggae and world rhythms. There is a $5 cover charge.

An Island band, Cargo Jam, will take the Bike’s stage at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, June 19, for a free show. The band, which features two guitarists and a saxophone player, plays mostly original compositions along with a sprinkling of John Mayer, Eric Clapton and B.B. King covers.

Both shows are for all ages until 11 p.m., and 21 and older after that.

Songwriters will grace the stage of Café Luna

Angela Reed, a longtime Café Luna favorite who loves playing at the intimate venue, will return at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 18, in a free show at the café. To sample Reed’s music, visit www.angelareed.com.

Ronnda Cadle, a songwriter and solo guitar instrumentalist, will have a free show at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Juner 19, at Café Luna. Cadle has more than 20 years of experience playing in front of live audiences.

She is currently recording her third album with Windham Hill founder William Ackerman at his Imaginary Road Studios in Vermont.

Islewilde stages ‘The Father of All Shows’

Islewilde, the Island’s community performance festival, will host a benefit called “The Father of All Shows” at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 20, at Red Bicycle Bistro.

The family-friendly show, hosted by spoken-word performer Seanjohn Welsh, will boast clowns, music, comedy, dance and a few other Father’s Day surprises. Island puppet master Clay Martin is a featured performer, and local clowns David Godsey, Katherine Daves and Steve Lipke will also take the stage. Guitarist Rob Strausser will be joined by violinist/vocalist Iris Spring and guitarist Wendy Jo Weston. Other musical acts include Tribal Voices, John Browne, Andre Sapp and Noah Dolan. Appearances by Patrick McManus, Hans Nelsen and Kathryn Zbryk will fill out the bill.

The requested donation for the benefit is $20. Children under 18 accompanied by an adult will be admitted free. Islewilde, now in its 18th year, will be held Aug. 20 to 22, at a location to be announced soon. The festival includes puppetry, pageantry, music and more. Cohan-Shangrow Duo plays baroque music

The Cohan-Shangrow Duo will present a concert, “Candlelight Baroque,” at 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 22, playing works by Handel, Vivaldi, Bach and other composers at Vashon Methodist Church. Renowned flutist Jeffrey Cohan and harpsichordist George Shangrow make up the duo. Admission is $20 and $15 for seniors and students. Youth ages 18 and younger will be admitted free. Tickets will be sold at the door.

A Cossu concert is coming up at Blue Heron

Scott Cossu will perform world-influenced jazz, rhythm and blues piano at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 26, at Blue Heron Art Center. Cossu is perhaps best known for his Windham Hill recordings.
