Vashon-Maury’s picturesque Tramp Harbor will be the centerpiece of a special presentation from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, at Vashon Theatre, celebrating the past, present and future of the natural area.
The event, “Many Lenses, One Vision” will showcase work by students of island photographer Ray Pfortner, showcasing the results of the most recent edition of Pfortner’s long-running “Shoot to Show” workshop at Vashon Center for the Arts.
During the workshop, eight students explored and photographed Tramp Harbor over the course of six weeks. They also learned about the harbor in presentations by Vashon Nature Center and the Friends of Tramp Harbor Dock, a group working to support the Vashon Park District’s plans to rebuild a new dock at the site.
All of Pfortner’s past Shoot to Show workshops, exploring various scenic sites, have culminated in a brick and mortar shows on the walls of local venues including The Hardware Store Restaurant and the Vashon-Maury Island Land Trust Building. But on June 17, the results of the Tramp Harbor workshop will be shown on the big screen — the biggest on the island, at Vashon Theatre.
There, audience members will see the work of the Shoot to Show students along with Pfortner’s most recent photographs of Tramp Harbor, and also hear a presentation made by the Friends of Tramp Harbor about the dock rebuilding project.
(The Friends plan to offer another evening at the theater in the fall, featuring Bruce Haulman presenting a program on the history of the dock.)
Pfortner will close the evening with a glimpse of his 31 years photographing Tramp Harbor.
The event is free, and will include People’s Choice balloting for Best of Show. There will also be Tramp Harbor postcards and greeting cards for sale, with 50% of proceeds going to the dock rebuild project.
