“Comedy is Good for the Soul,” an evening of comedy and dining, will be presented at Sound Food on Saturday, Jan. 23. A soul food dinner will begin at 5 p.m., and the comedy show will start at 7:30 p.m. There is a cover charge of $8 for the comedy, which is for adults only. Comedians on the bill include Laura Park, Sean Ottey, Tom Sullivan, Jay Hollingsworth and others.

“UMO Rouge,” a champagne cabaret and benefit for UMO Ensemble, will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, at Open Space for Arts & Community. Organizers are urging Islanders to wear red to this hot event, aimed at warming up a rainy end-of-January night on the Island. The evening will kick off with a performance from UMO’s Young Aerialists program and also include other aerial acts. Music will be provided by Tumbao, one of Seattle’s best-known salsa bands, and there will be a live auction as well as a banquet of sweet and savory food from The Hardware Store Restaurant.Tickets for the adults-only evening are $20 in advance at Books by the Way and the Hardware Store Restaurant and $25 at the door.

Trace Bundy, an acclaimed guitarist, will perform in concert at a Vashon Rotary benefit at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, at Red Bicycle Bistro & Sushi.The concert is being held to raise money for Rotary’s efforts to support high school youth, including scholarship programs and an upcoming trip that will send three high school students to Guatemala to support community development in villages on and around Lake Atitlan. Bundy, who has become a YouTube sensation due to his unique style of playing, has released several recordings, the most recent of which is “Missile Bell,” a two-part project consisting of a DVD filmed live at the Boulder Theatre in November 2007 and a studio CD. In 2008, he was named “Most Promising New Talent of the Year” by Acoustic Guitar Magazine and came in third in the same magazine’s “Best Fingerstyle Guitarist of the Year” category. Silverwood Gallery is gearing up for one of its most highly anticipated shows — an invitational exhibit that takes place every other year in February. This year’s show, which will have an opening reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, will feature the work of 92 painters, sculptors and ceramicists, each of whom has created a piece based on the theme of “Flower Power.”

“Little Red Riding Hood,” a children’s opera by Seymour Barab, will have a performance at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, in Chautauqua Elementary School’s multi-purpose room. The production is a gift to the children and families of Vashon, courtesy of Vashon Opera and Vashon Park District, and no tickets are necessary to attend. Vashon Opera’s artistic director and soprano Jennifer Krikawa will appear in the title role, joined by baritone Andrew Krikawa as the wolf and woodsman and Holly Boaz as the mother and grandmother. Jennifer Krikawa described the 35-minute opera as an “adorable comedy” for children, with a story that turns the tale’s scary four-legged villian into a lovable wolf who hates sweets. Krikawa said she was especially excited to include Islander Holly Boaz in the cast. Boaz, an accomplished soprano, has appeared with the Seattle Symphony, Tacoma Opera and many other companies. She currently teaches at Pacific Lutheran University and has a private voice studio on Vashon, where she teaches students ages 12 and older. “A Grand Night for Singing,” a review of songs by Rodgers and Hammerstein, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 12 and 13, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14, at Vashon High School. The event, directed by Marita Ericksen and featuring an all-star cast of Island performers, is a benefit for Drama Dock. Tickets are $15 for the Friday and Sunday shows, and $20 for the Saturday night show, which includes chocolate and other surprises.

Church of Great Rain’s Valentine‘s Day Special, a blow-out edition of the popular Island variety show of comedy, music and more, will be presented at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14, at Open Space for Arts & Community. The show will feature a special musical guest as well as sketches and performance by Church of Great Rain regulars. Admission is by donation.
