The Vashon Film Society and the Vashonistas, a collective of island clothing designers, will celebrate ageless style with a live fashion parade before a screening of the new documentary “Advanced Style” at 9:30 p.m. Friday at the Vashon Theatre.

“Advanced Style” first appeared as an online photo blog when New York based photographer Ari Seth Cohen began capturing images of spirited, eclectically dressed women who were well over the age of 60. His wildly popular blog led to a book, then a coloring book and finally the eponymous 2014 documentary film from Cohen and director Lina Plioplyte.

The film portrays the lives of seven women between the ages of 62 and 95 who boldly defy senior citizen stereotypes through joyful fashion choices and personal philosophies. One fashionista profiled in the film proclaims, “I am dressed up for the theater of my life every day.”

When island hat and headpiece designer Azula Christie Phillips heard about the film, she thought the Vashonistas should host the film on Vashon. After approaching the Vashon Theatre, Phillips and designers Sally Shivers, Patricia Toovey and Dorothy Dunnicliff hatched a plan to collaborate with the Vashon Film Society to run a fashion parade on the theater stage before the film begins.

The Vashonistas, who have showcased apparel and accessories in island fashion shows since 2007, plan to honor the creativity and “advanced style” of Vashon’s women during the pre-film festivities.

The fashion parade will begin at 9:30 p.m., followed by the screening of “Advanced Style” (71 minutes). All attendees are encouraged to join the fun by dressing in outfits that express their own personality and style.

The Vashon Film Society presents special feature and documentary shows on First Friday Gallery Cruise nights following the art walk.

Tickets are $7 at the door.
