WEDNESDAY 10

VMICC meets

The Vashon Maury Island Community Council (VMICC) Governance and Policy Committee will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight, Dec. 10, at Courthouse Square.

As a result of votes taken at the August and September VMICC meetings concerning board election method and because King County will be implementing all-mail ballots for our next election in 2010, the committee will discuss revisions to the VMICC policies and procedures for elections. Any proposed revisions will be brought before the full council for a vote.

THURSDAY 11

Spanish mass

Bishop Elizondo will celebrate mass in Spanish on the Eve of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church. Confession will be available in Spanish and English starting at 6 p.m.

A reception, including traditional Mexican foods, will follow in the church’s social hall. All are welcome.

Spruce up puppets

The Backbone Campaign’s giant puppets are going to the inauguration and need some tender loving care before heading off to Washington, DC. The Backbone Campaign invites all Islanders to join the Vashon Backbone Brigade, a troupe of concerned citizens and activists using arts for social change. The group will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at the Sheffield warehouse to repair puppets and plan events around the inauguration.

FRIDAY 12

Poetry open mic

Vashon Youth Council, Development of Island Teens and the Vashon Park District will present a coffeehouse at Minglement, an open mic event with poetry and music.

It will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, and Minglement will be open for business.

The community is welcome to perform at this event. Adults may sign up in the Youth Council office (in the Common Ground Building behind AJ’s coffee stand), and youth may sign up in the Vashon High School office.

SATURDAY 13

Adopt-a-cat day

Vashon Island Pet Protectors hosts an adopt-a-cat day every Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at its new adoption center at 12200 S.W. 243rd St.

Late night for teens

LateNight @ the Library will meet from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13.

Teens can limber up with Dance Dance Revolution and Guitar Hero open play, get a glimpse of the New Year by having their palms read in the Roma tradition, participate in the Vashon Library Cyber Café, surf the Web or play a game.

Security will be provided. The event is for students in grades six through 12.

Raw food potluck

A raw food vegan potluck will meet from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, at a private home on Vashon. All are welcome.

Buddhist meditation

The Vashon Buddhist Insight Group is a meditation and discussion sangha that meets every Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Zen center, 20406 S.W. Chautauqua Beach Rd.

Folk choir performs

Vashon’s new singing group, the Free Range Folk Choir, will perform a free concert at the Burton Church at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19. The group, under the direction of Shane Jewell, will present a program of world folk music with songs from South Africa, the Czech Republic, England and Georgia (near Russia) as well as a traditional Jewish song and a modern gospel tune.

Jewell brings more than 17 years of musical experience as a performer, teacher and arranger of classical, folk and a cappella music. Jewell says, this concert “will lift the spirit and cultivate community.”
