Manage manure

The King Conservation District will offer “Manure Management: Got Livestock? Got Manure!” from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6. “Pasture Management: Becoming a Grass Farmer” will meet from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13.

These free workshops will be held at the Land Trust Building. Participants have a chance to win $50 off their next purchase of “best managment practices” items (footing, fencing, gutters, etc.)

Laugh for health

A “Laugh for the Health of It” class will meet from 7 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Island Yoga Center.

Leslie Rodgers will lead the class; she is a certified laughter leader.

Zen center retreat

The Puget Sound Zen Center will hold a three-day retreat at Camp Sealth on Vashon Friday evening through Monday, Nov. 7 through 10. The retreat will be led by Gentei Sandy Stewart, Abbot of the North Carolina Zen Center, and Koshin Chris Cain, Abbot of the Puget Sound Zen Center.

The cost of the retreat is $190 (members, students, seniors $150), room and board included. Scholarships are available. Part-time participation is possible.

Flute workshop

A free Native American flute workshop will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 8, presented by Peter Ali.

The class is for anyone interested in learning the basics of playing the wooden American Indian love or courting flute. A handmade cedar six-hole Native flute in the key of A is provided.

Greeting cards

Rondi Lightmark will offer her workshop about running a greeting card company from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8. She is the creator of Great Dog Greetings, and she designs and prints her cards at home, mostly using photographs of dogs and cars of Vashon. Great Dog Greetings are sold on Vashon, as well as throughout the Pacific Northwest, and in Idaho, Ohio and Vermont.

The workshop, which is a repeat of one Lightmark gave last year, will cover design issues, subject matter, captions for the successful greeting card, production, pricing, marketing and licensing.

Participants should bring samples of favorite greeting cards, samples of their own art that they believe is card-worthy and a bag lunch. The workshop will be at Lightmark’s home on 87th Street. The cost is $60.

Breathing

A Transformational Breathing workshop will meet Wednesday, Nov. 12, and Monday, Nov. 23, at the Hanna Barn, 7712 Point Robinson Rd., at 6 p.m. for first-timers and 6:15 p.m. for all others.

Participants will learn to breathe in a way that eliminates restrictive breathing patterns, transforms negative thought patterns and accesses higher levels of awareness, according to organizers.

Eating consciously

The class “Autumn Detox — Eating Consciously with Anti-Inflammatory Foods” will teach participants how to take a break from potentially problematic foods, which often include wheat and baked goods, dairy products and sugar.

In this class, instructors will focus on easy and healthful seasonal recipes that will incorporate anti-inflammatory foods that will nourish the body in preparation for the holidays and winter.

Emily Vogt and Hillery Crocker will teach the class. Participants can choose either 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, or 6:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19.
