Bring out the white elephants

The Southend Community Club will enjoy a fun-filled evening playing White Elephant Bingo on Saturday, May 17, following socialization at 6:30 p.m. and a potluck dinner at about 7 p.m.

Everyone is invited; bring a wrapped “white elephant” for a bingo prize and a dish for the potluck. Be prepared for the fun. Prizes may be exchanged, and most prizes are true white elephants for the donor, but who knows what they might mean for another player?

The club meets at the southend clubhouse over the Tahlequah fire station. Everyone is welcome.

Free software discussed

Vashon Computer Club will meet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, at the Vashon Senior Center.

The usual Q and A session and troubleshooting discussions will open this meeting. Since everyone likes to get something for nothing, the meeting will also introduce a cornucopia of free software. From the May issue of PC World, there will be a number of choices for the best freeware. Included also will be other tried and true free applications demonstrated by club managers. Some of these applications can be run from a flash drive, very handy when you are at a computer not your own. Although offers for free stuff can be fraught with hazards, the ones to be investigated at the meeting will be safe to download and use. Some of the programs to be shown will include word processing, image editing, e-mail and games.

Anyone may attend this meeting and participate in the discussion, free of charge; the public is always welcome. Membership is affordable and offers additional benefits.

P.E.O. hosts garage sale

The P. E.O. garage sale is an annual affair that is well known by Islanders devoted to attending garage sales. This year’s event will take place on May 10, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church. As usual, the sale promises to be another chance to score on great items and fabulous deals.

So what is P.E.O. anyway? The P.E.O. Sisterhood was founded in 1869 by seven young college women on the campus of Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. Today, more than a quarter of a million women are members of P.E.O. with chapters throughout the United States and Canada — including two chapters here on Vashon Island. The garage sale is hosted by Chapter HU.

From its inception, P.E.O. has taken an active role in promoting educational opportunities for women, particularly those faced with hardships in life who would benefit from either completing an unfinished degree, obtaining a college education or other vocational training. An emergency assistance fund has helped many women stay afloat in unanticipated times of crisis.

There are many women on Vashon who have benefited from these funds who are now making significant contributions to our community using the skills they gained by continuing their education.
