Quilters sew for VCCC

The Vashon Quilt Guild met on Sept. 16. Margaret Bickel requested help with the annual project of making clothing protectors for the Vashon Community Care Center (VCCC).

The guild voted to purchase a membership in the La Conner Quilt and Textile Museum.

It was announced that entry forms for the May 2 and 3 Quilt Show called “Quilts In Bloom” will be available in November and that Maggie Ball from Bainbridge Island will be one of the judges for the show.

Judy Dohm asked anyone who owns a crazy quilt to bring it to the Oct. 21 meeting, which will be about making a crazy quilt block.

Janice Johns reported that the night group will meet at VCCC at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2. Nancy Weed will teach paper-piecing during that session.

Ursula Dashiell was the auctioneer for the sale of many quilting-related donated items. Benefits from the sale will assist with many Quilt Guild projects and the upcoming quilt show.

The next meeting will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the Presbyterian Church.

Sight rifles at club range

The members of the Vashon Sportsmen’s Club are opening the club to all residents of the Islands of Vashon and Maury for the purpose of sighting in their firearms for the current hunting season.

The club range will be open at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, for all members of the public.

If interested in sighting in your firearm, please call Fred Hansen at 463-4079 for further information.

The club members are aware that they have the only shooting range on the Island and feel that it is important the facilities be made available for this purpose to the members of the community at large.

Channel 21 shows ‘Vortex I’

Voice of Vashon’s television programming on Comcast Channel 21 next week will feature “Vortex I.” This video from an Oregon Public Access station chronicles the creation and staging of the 1970 Oregon state-sponsored rock festival, Vortex I. The event grew from the Vietnam War protests and a potential clash between protesters and an American Legion convention featuring Richard Nixon’s appearance. The video will be shown at 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, and again at the same time for the next few weeks.

For the full broadcast schedule including both audio and video schedules, see www. voiceofvashon.org.

If you have been creating your own video featuring Vashon/Maury related content, please email dans@islandimage.net.

Stratton says get prepared

The public is invited to hear Rex Stratton address disaster preparedness at the Vashon Island Rotary Club meeting at 6:45 a.m. Friday, Sept. 26, at the Vashon Island Golf and Country Club.

A 15-minute trailer to a DVD, “People Like You,” will be shown. It was produced by a Rotary club in Ojai, Calif., a community with similarities to Vashon. The DVD portrays the need for preparedness and how to achieve it. The purpose of showing the trailer is to get the club’s commitment to purchase additional copies for Vashon libraries, VashonBePrepared and Vashon Island Fire & Rescue to use as educational tools in this community.

Stratton’s talk is free, and breakfast may be purchased.
