Partners in Education gears up for phone-a-thon

Thank you, Vashon! Vashon Partners in Education owes its success to the generosity of many individuals and businesses that partner with us in our annual community fundraiser.

Vashon Partners in Education (PIE) was founded in 1987 to help the staff of Vashon public schools purchase educational materials and programs not covered by state funding. Every year pre K-12 teachers submit grant requests for creative programs and innovative educational items. Last year’s PIE dollars funded 39 grants, which included Vashon Artists in Schools program, a giant outdoor chess set at Chautauqua, science kits for second grade, digital projectors and digital cameras for the high school math department, nonfiction library books, DVDs for social studies and a new PA system for the high school.

Twenty-one years ago our board members called their friends and neighbors for PIE’s first fundraiser and netted $3,500. In 2007 our supporters donated $72,717, bringing the total to almost $800,000 donated through the years.

This year’s phonation is on Oct. 7, 8 and 9. Please answer our call again this year, and help us meet this year’s goal of $75,000. Every donation helps to make a lasting impact on our children’s lives.

When our community volunteers call, you have the choice of contributing to either our “regular” fund, which will be spent in the 2008-09 school year, or our “endowment fund” intended to grow for the future. Another option is to give a donation as a memorial to a friend or loved one who valued excellence in education.
