Ferry ticket resale site test launched on Vashon

Island commuters who will not be able to use all of the rides on their multi-ride tickets before the expiration date can now sell them online thanks to a new website created by a Bainbridge Island couple.

Ferrytail.com is at the beginning of a three-week test run for Vashon routes only before it is rolled out to all other ferry routes (except those to Canada) in July. The website works like StubHub and is a secondary market for Wave2Go passes, Ferry Tail co-founder Robin Kallas explained. Commuters who have extra rides left on their pass can list the pass for sale and make back two-thirds of the purchase price.

“We realized there was a need. We have two high-schoolers so we’re always taking the ferry back-and-forth. We were always getting 20-ride cards and ending up with three or four rides left by the expiration date so we’d just have to throw it in the trash. That’s throwing away money.”

She and her husband hired an attorney and created the business, then spent a year with a web designer creating the website.

“It hadn’t been done before and we thought it should exist,” Kallas said.

To list a pass, sellers enter the 22-digit code from their Wave2Go pass onto the website along with how many rides are left and when it expires. Buyers can enter their search criteria, such as route and number of uses needed, and are then presented with a list of available passes.

The website is not affiliated in any way with the Washington State Ferries system or Washington’s Department of Transportation.
