King County Council-member Joe McDermott recently attended an island ceremony where he recognized former Vashon Maury Community Food Bank Executive Director Yvonne Pitrof for her service.

After 10 years leading the agency, Pitrof resigned in April, saying she was proud of what she had accomplished, but it was time for her to grow into other things.

Current and former food bank staff, board members and donors attended the June 12 event, said board President Susan Flores, who noted she was honored to be present at the heartfelt ceremony.

The official recognition was signed by all the county councilmembers and noted several of Pitrof’s achievements, such as making fresh, healthy food available to 15 percent of the island’s population each year; initiating successful programs to end hunger, including the farm and garden program; and developing the island’s first summer lunch program, Picnics in the Park.

The food bank recently hired Robbie Rohr, who has three decades of experience working with nonprofits, to replace Pitrof.
