Caring for sea creatures
Marine conservation nonprofit SR3 will hold a presentation about their work and research into rescuing and caring for sick and injured sea creatures. The presentation is from 5 to 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, at the Vashon-Maury Island Land Trust’, at 10014 SW Bank Rd. Housing Forum
Vashon HouseHold will host a free community conversation about affordable housing at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, at Vashon Center for the Arts.
Join State Sen. Joe Nguyen, State Rep. Emily Alvarado, Seattle Times reporter Heidi Groover, and executive directors of Shelter America and Vashon HouseHold for the discussion.
The forum will be an opportunity to hear what is working on Vashon, what is working in other regional communities, how state leaders are trying to design pro-housing policies, and how you can help. This event will be facilitated by islander and musician Chris Ballew. Reserve a seat at vashonhousehold.org.
Fix-It Cafe
Vashon’s next Fix-It Cafe will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at Open Space for Arts & Community. Bring your broken items and a dedicated team of expert fixers will do their best to get the items working again. This event is held in the true spirit of reuse and recycling and keeps serviceable items out of landfills.
Fixers can work on lamps, small appliances, furniture, clothing, electronics — just about anything that does not use gas. Most items are fixed for free unless parts are required. Registration is required at vashonfixit.com.
Brown Briefly
Housing is an incredibly important issue across the country and right here at home. Join Brown Briefly hosts Truman O’Brien, Bruce Haulman, Craig Beles and Kevin Jones at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, on Voice of Vashon, 101.9FM, to hear Representative Emily Alvarado, Vice Chair of the Housing and Local Government Committees, talk about the 2023 State legislative session.
Senior Center Board slots
To apply for a seat on Vashon Senior Center’s Board of Directors, applications must be received no later than Wednesday, Oct. 4. Drop off at the front desk, or mail to P.O. Box 848, Vashon 98070. Elections are held in early November.
NAMI Support Group
NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Friends and Family Support Group will meet in person, at Vashon Presbyterian Church, and also on Zoom, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5. Join on Zoom.
This support group meets monthly and is intended to be of help to those who have a loved one in their life with a mental health condition. For further information, contact 425-221-1142 or pastorleigh@comcast.net.
Poetry Open Mic
Margaret Roncone, Vashon’s new Poet Laureate, will host a monthly poetry open mic reading. The first event will take place at 7:15, Thursday, Oct. 5, in the atrium of Open Space for Arts & Community. All are welcome. There will be a sign-up sheet for those who want to read.
Open house at Station 55
Vashon Island Fire & Rescue will hold an open house at Station 55, on Bank Road, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, Oct 7, as a kickoff to Fire Prevention Week.
The open house will feature a pancake breakfast, a bouncy house, farm animals and other family fun. The morning will include demonstrations around the theme of kitchen safety and other information provided by VashonBePrepared.
CiderFest returns
Vashon Island Chamber of Commerce will present the 2023 edition of CiderFest, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at Vashon Village — a day filled with events, exhibits and treats for all ages. In addition to popular cider tastings, the Chamber will introduce a new cider-maker competition, judged by premiere regional cidermakers. Other activities will include fruit pressing, non-alcoholic beverages, food vendors, and more. Read all about it here.
Water District 19
Water District 19’s next regular board meeting is set for 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, in the District’s board room. This is a change from the District’s normal second-Tuesday-of-the-month board meeting, due to the general manager being away that day.
Health Resource Fair
A Health and Resource Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at Vashon Methodist Church.
Island residents will have an opportunity to learn more about health and social service resources on the island and will be able to receive flu shots through the Vashon Pharmacy. The event is being planned by members of the Vashon Social Services Network, the Vashon Health Care District, VIFR and Vashon Pharmacy. More information, including all the participants, will be posted on Vashon Health Care District’s Facebook page.
Threshold Choir sound bath
Starting on Friday, Oct. 13, Vashon’s Threshold Choir will be in residence at Vashon Senior Center every second Friday of the month from 2 to 3 p.m., offering up their voices to anyone who would like to receive a sound bath. Come and experience harmonious singing while you relax in a chaise lounge chair. Also, more private home sessions can be arranged.
It takes a Village
