Vashon-Maury Club and Organization Briefs

A look at what's happening with various clubs and organizations on Vashon and Maury islands.

Food is topic on Comcast 21

Voice of Vashon’s television programming on Comcast Channel 21 next week will feature video from a recent forum held by the Vashon Democratic Club titled, “Why is my food costing so much?” A panel of experts in food production and distribution from Vashon Island Growers Association, Thriftway, King County and the Vashon Maury Community food bank discussed the causes of high food prices and some possible solutions. This show will be broadcast at 10 p.m. Monday, June 2, and Wednesday, June 4.

For the full broadcast schedule including both audio and video schedules, see www .voiceofvashon.org. If you have been creating your own video that you would like to share with your Island neighbors, please e-mail dans@islandimage.net.

Eat out and support kids

News from Big Wally Campaign Headquarters: Things are heating up in my corner. I am running for unoffical mayor to support Pirates Youth Football.

The vote boxes are out in 30 locations around the Island. Look for them in your favorite store.

Islanders can order a “Big Wally Pizza” at both The Rock Island Pub & Pizza and Vashon Pizza, and the pizzerias will kick in $1 to my mayoral campaign. A “Big Wally Burger” from Zoomies will also contribute $1 to my mayoral bid. Now Sporty’s has entered the fray with “Big Wally’s Pancakes,” also with $1 of the purchase price going toward my mayoral campaign.

The pancakes are so good.

This year’s mayor’s race is really a very special one in drawing the community together.

Crochet with fiber fans

Vashon’s Fiber Net group will finish this year’s programming with a hands-on crocheting session this Saturday, June 7.

Suzanne Adams will lead everyone through basic crochet techniques and offer help to those with more advanced questions. Bring an H or I size crochet hook and light-colored worsted type yarn if possible.

Everyone is welcome at the meeting from 10 a.m. to noon in the Sunrise Ridge meeting room in the Voice of Vashon offices west the Vashon Health Center.

Computer Club meets

Vashon Computer Club will meet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, at the Vashon Senior Center.

This meeting marks the end of this season for the Vashon Computer Club. For this meeting, after the usual troubleshooting, Michael O’Donnell will demonstrate the addition and replacement of two components in a desktop computer, addition of a large hard drive and replacement of a graphics card. Because she wants more power and capability, Mary Pekarek has agreed to bring her workstation for the “surgery.”

Even though most folks probably don’t want to try this, it will be enlightening for those not familiar with the insides of a computer. People who haven’t seen inside a machine may be amazed at how roomy it appears considering the power enclosed. Laptops are a compact version of the same sort of components.

Anyone may attend this meeting and participate in the discussion, free of charge; the public is always welcome. Membership is affordable and offers additional benefits.
