Poetry Salon

The Poetry Salon will meet at 7 p.m. tonight, June 4, at the Vashon Bookshop.

The group will embrace the bard of all bards, William Shakespeare, and his verse. People are invited to bring a favorite sonnet, poem, question or Shakespearean puzzle or any poem, original or not. Or they can just go and listen.

DSHS rep here

A representative from the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) will be at Vashon Youth & Family Service (VYFS) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, June 5. Call VYFS for more information at 463-5511.

‘Now Hear This…’

“Now Hear This…,” a performance by Truth Be Told Theater group, will be Thursday, June 5, at the Vashon High School library. A barbecue will begin at 6 p.m., with opening remarks by Stephen Bogan at 7:15 p.m. and the show at 7:30 p.m. The show is directed by high school teacher Harris Levinson. A community discussion will follow the performance, which is a documentary theater presentation based on the findings of Vashon’s Healthy Youth Survey. The evening, including a T-shirt, is free.

Master gardeners

The master gardener clinic will meet from 10 a.m to 2 p.m. Friday, June 6, and Saturday, June 7, outside of True Value.

Master gardeners of Vashon will be available to help answer gardening questions, including ideas on selecting appropriate plants for a particular garden situation.

Stop by for gardening advice, available resource material, plant identification and more.

Low tide celebration

The third annual Low Tide Celebration will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at Point Robinson with many free activities.

Farmers market

On Saturday, June 4, the Vashon Farmers Market will welcome Island acoustic/soul musician Sarah Christine at 11 a.m. King County Master Gardeners will also be on hand to answer questions about how to grow food on Vashon Island.

Farmers will be selling salad greens, bok choi, spinach, eggs, milk, cheese, eggs, wine, flower and vegetable starts, cut flowers, trees, herbs and woodland perennials. There will also be a wide variety of crafts, including garden furniture and chicken tractors, all produced on Vashon.

The Monkey Tree will sell soup, bread and baked goods.

The farmers market meets in the the Village Green from 10 a.m. to

2 p.m. every Saturday.

Adopt-a-cat day

Vashon Island Pet Protectors (VIPP) hosts an adopt-a-cat day from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. every Saturday at Pandora’s Box.

Preschool open house

Little Tree Montessori Preschool and Kindergarten will hold an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 7.

Montessori is an internationally recognized method of education that is based on the developmental needs of children.

Enjoy refreshments, children’s crafts, a spacious play yard and forest trails. Scholarships are available for the 2008/2009 school year.

Look for balloons on the green mailbox at 21204 Monument Rd. S.W. and follow the drive to a turn around near the end.

Visit Camp Burton

Camp Burton’s new Retreat Center is almost complete. The new building replaces the older facility of the same name and location. To celebrate, a dedication and open house is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday, June 8, beginning at Burton Lodge.

Part of the program will recognize Ron and Joan Huber for their work from 1971-1984 as manager and program director.

Cindy Sheehan visits

Islanders are invited to an afternoon with Cindy Sheehan from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, June 8, at the Vashon High School theater.

She will speak on “A Revolution of Values: Moving from a War Economy to a Peace Economy.” Sheehan, an anti-war leader, is challenging Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi for Congress.

Tickets are $10 to $25 on a sliding scale and can be purchased at the Vashon Bookshop or Books by the Way.

Poets at the library

The Vashon Library will host two poets, Elizabeth Austen and J.W. Marshall, in an evening titled “How the End Begins: Two Poets on Power, Sexuality and Mortality” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 11.

Watkins signs books

Island author Marj Watkins will sign “Royal Spy,” the sequel to “Rotaida,” at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 14, at Vashon Bookshop. The book is an historical adventure set during Charlemagne’s reign.
