Kids learn about bugs
“Walk on the Wild Side: Incredible Mini-Beasts” presented by Barbara Gustafson will meet at the Vashon Library during the next few weeks.
Kids can dive into the world of flying, crawling, swimming and hopping critters. They’ll examine bugs found in the water, trees and soil of Vashon and learn where to find them, how to catch them and why they are important to the planet.
Ages 5 to 7 meet at 9:30 a.m., and kids ages 7 to 11 meet at 11 a.m. each day the groups gather.
On Wednesday, July 9, kids will investigate local pond water that will show the stages of insect metamorphosis, camouflage and adaptations to a watery world.
On Tuesday, July 15, kids will learn about the physical features of mini-beasts that help them to catch their prey. Also, they’ll play a bird beak game to see how birds prey on an assortment of spineless critters.
On Wednesday, July 16, kids will construct and take home their own bug net, butterfly holding cage and temporary bug home. They’ll also learn how to set up bug traps, a Berlese funnel and other tools for further mini-beast investigations.

Brown Bag Story Time
Brown Bag Story Time at the Vashon Library meets at 1 p.m. Wednesdays, until Aug. 6, for ages 6 to 10.
Kids can bring a sack lunch to eat while they listen to stories. Treats will be served.

Special markets
A special Farmers Market will meet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, July 11, in the Village Green because the market will be closed for Strawberry Festival festivities on Saturday, July 12.
George Page of Sea Breeze Farm will be there on Friday with milk, eggs, lamb, chicken and cheese. Other farmers and crafters will also be there selling goods.

Preschool Story Time
Preschool Story Time meets at 2 p.m. Tuesdays until Aug. 5, for ages 3 to 5. The program is 30 minutes of stories, songs and fun.

Farmers Market
The Wednesday Farmers Market will open from 2 to 5 p.m. July 16 for the season in the Village Green.
Farmers will be selling fresh broccoli, salad mix, raspberries, sweet and hot peppers, garlic, new potatoes, peas, lettuces and more to prepare a mid-week meal.
Tunes at Noon will play between noon and 3 p.m. each Wednesday as well.

Audubon program
The July Audubon program will be a double- header, and everyone is welcome to attend. The group will host sisters Kristen and Kelsey Kozak of Vashon. They will give a presentation in the first half of the evening on their successful 10-year history of raising, breeding and showing bantam chickens.
The second part of the program will be wildlife photographer and Tahoma Audubon member Nate Chappell presenting his bird and wildlife photography from Ecuador and Argentina.
The meeting will also be the official annual chapter meeting and will be held at the Land Trust Building at 10014 S.W. Bank Rd. It will start at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 17.

Lavender Festival
The annual Lavender Festival will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 19 and 20, at three Island lavender farms: Fox Farm, Lavender Sisters and Lavender Hill Farms.
Activities include children’s crafts, U-pick lavender, lavender wand-making and many lectures and demonstrations, including topics such as lavender cultivation, harvesting and drying lavender, cooking with lavender and the many uses of lavender in the home.
Local artists will display and sell their artwork, food booths will provide snacks, or people can bring their own picnic lunches and enjoy gardens, patios and the fragrance of lavender.
Sachets, lavender plants and other lavender-related products will be available for sale.

Opera preview
The Vashon Library will offer an opera preview with Norm Hollingshead at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 27. He will preview “Aida” by Giuseppe Verdi.
Glorious pageantry, rousing choruses and a basketful of great tunes elevate the moving tale of forbidden love between general and slave girl in ancient Egypt.
The grandest of all grand operas, “Aida” is also an intensely personal love story overflowing with passions as up to the minute as our own.
Verdi’s power to translate human emotion into magnificent music was at its zenith when he created this highly original and enjoyable masterwork, arguably, according to opera fans, the best evening’s entertainment he ever devised.

Backyard Safari
The Vashon Library will host “Backyard Safari: Celebrating Nature All Around You” at 3 p.m. Monday, July 28, in the Ober Park performance room next door to the library.
It will be presented by Dennis Westphall and Lorraine Bayes, the founders of Tickle Tune Typhoon, for kids ages 2 and older.
Kids and caregivers are invited to this playful, interactive concert featuring large, colorful costumes and Earth-friendly songs that teach about insects, animals, trees, recycling and conservation.

‘Virginia V’ cruise
Tickets are available for the Sunday, Aug. 17 cruise aboard the steamer “Virginia V,” sponsored by the Vashon Maury Island Heritage Association.
The around-the-Islands cruise on a National Historic Landmark vessel will depart from Vashon’s north-end passenger ferry dock at 1 p.m. and return around 5:30 p.m.
Tickets are $60 for Heritage Association members and $75 for non-members. To purchase tickets, stop by the Island Heritage Museum at 10105 S.W. Bank Rd. on Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays.
