Vashon mayoral candidate secures pizza-lover vote

Paul Wallrof, coach of Vashon Pirates Youth Football, is running for mayor of Vashon this year, and he’s got some creative campaign strategies. He has rallied the support of Vashon Pizza and The Rock Island Pub & Pizza, which are selling a “Big Wally Pizza,” and with each sale will donate $1 to Wallrof’s campaign. Zoomies has added a “Big Wally Burger” to its menu, and whenever anyone orders it, Zoomies too will donate $1 to Wallrof’s run for mayor.

Wallrof, who is running against Carol Slaughter for the position, explained recently why his players, headed into their fifth season with Big Wally at their helm, need the support of Islanders.

It costs $250 to suit up a player for practice and games, he said, with helmets a particular concern.

It also costs a great deal to keep a football league running — the teams have to pay insurance, field preparation and maintenance, officials’ salaries, for the use of practice fields and lighting fees.

The football teams will need to purchase two vertical power coolers because their practice and game fields do not provide sanitary drinking water.

“Our coaches also need to take classes and become certified in first aid and CPR,” he said. “So a vote for Big Wally is a vote for our youth.”
