Barbara Louise Duntley, former educator and long time member of the Vashon Island community, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2024, at the age of 94. Barbara was born on January 9, 1930, in Portland, Oregon, to Glenn and Viola Humphrey. She was preceded in death by her siblings Jim, Sue, and Adele, as well as her husband Frank.

Barbara graduated with honors from Central Washington College and dedicated over three decades of her life to teaching first grade at Island schools, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of her students and colleagues alike.

Outside of her career, Barbara was a devoted wife and mother. She shared 36 years with her husband Frank, and togetherthey raised theirfamily. Afterretirement, Barbara spent time traveling, volunteering for various Island organizations and was an active member of her “widows club,” book club and PEO. As a child growing up in the Depression, Barbara and herfamily moved numerous times as herfather changed jobs. She always said she never wanted her children to have to change schools like she had to. And they never did. When deciding whether or not to move to the Island in the late 1950s, Barbara avowed that she “would rather live in a shack on the beach than in a castle on a hill.” Barbara lived happily, and passed away in the house on the beach that Frank built.

Surviving Barbara are her children Roberta Morrison (Tom), Cindy Duntley (Matt Lewis), David Duntley (Ellen Sebastian), Lea Heffernan (Peter), grandchildren Nicole Fink (Tony), Tim Morrison (Nicole), Kalie Bergstrom (Niklas), Katrina Heffernan, and great-grandchildren, Taylor Fink and Emily Lindbo (Austin). At Barbara’s request, no services will be held. Any donations in her memory may be given to Vashon Schools Foundation/PIE (Partners in Education) or the Vashon Senior Center.
