The International Association of Firefighters Local 4189, serving Vashon and Maury Islands, endorses Jan Milligan for fire commissioner because we see a need for new leadership on our board. Incumbent board members have known for years that the district was facing a financial crisis but took no steps to resolve it nor plan ahead. Jan is a long-time island resident with an impressive record of commitment to the community. This is evident in her many years of work as the director of Camp Sealth and currently as the head of the Vashon CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) program. Her husband, Doug, is a veteran firefighter/paramedic for the city of Bellevue. We believe Jan is well-qualified and the best candidate to assess hard budget numbers and make prudent and responsible decisions to stabilize the fire district so that we can provide reliable service to the community.
