Three months ago, the Vashon Park District board wrote a letter to the King County Library System board making one significant piece of information clear: The park district remains willing to work with the library system to find a way to keep the Vashon branch at Ober Park.
A creek ran through my grandmother’s front yard, and in the fall it was jam-packed full of salmon, swimming hard against the current. They seemed pretty big to me, all battered and ragged with their hooked noses. There were plenty of dead ones floating backwards, sort of ghostly white, eyes staring at nothing. We were sternly warned to stay out of the rose garden that edged the creek while we were busy staring at the salmon.
Mainland cities grow from the inside out, but small islands are populated from the outside in. The first human inhabitants arrive by water and settle on the shoreline to hunt and fish. Vashon began with native peoples earning their living on our cobbled beaches with only occasional forays into the interior for wood and meat.
The message is clear: Don’t give up. Because once we do, Glacier Northwest has won.
