More than 70 triathletes took to the waters of Quartermaster Harbor and the roads of Burton Peninsula and beyond Sunday morning in the 10th Annual Heart of the Sound Triathlon, a sprint distance event sanctioned by USA Triathlon.

The athletes enjoyed fantastic weather as they swam half a mile, rode 14.6 miles and ran 3.6 miles to complete their event, which included four relay teams, all from Vashon.

The first overall and masters winners were Drew Magill of Bellevue and Tracy Orcutt of Seattle. Orcutt is a repeat winner from years past.

Not far behind were the first Vashon award winners, Jeff and Connie Cunningham, both experienced long-distance triathletes.

Winners of the youth division were Island teenagers Tyler Stoffer and Tazi Flory. The youngest athlete in the sprint race was Jonathan Wiley, 14, of Bellingham. Dan Chasan and Gail Brownell of Vashon took home honors in the senior divisions.

At noon the adults made way for the Kids Triathlon, as 33 children ranging from 7 to 15 years old swam, biked and ran short distances. The sprint distance and kids events were made possible by dozens of volunteers and community supporters.

Many thanks are also extended to the Island drivers who took extra care to avoid athletes on the roads.
