Boys’ lacrosse gets underway with multiple victories

The lacrosse season is underway with solid results in all age groups.

The high school-age team is off to one of the best starts in the club with opening wins against Bellarmine (10-7) and South Kitsap (18-3).

Riding the season’s first two victories, the Vashon Vultures boys’ high school team travelled to Poulsbo on Tuesday, March 22, to face a tough rival in North Kitsap. Despite the expectation that the game was likely to be close, the Vultures came away with a decisive 12-5 victory, showing mid-season form early in the season.

Offensively, the Vultures scored five goals from senior Eliot Carleton and four from sophomore Max Shira. Adrian St. Germain contributed with a goal of his own, as did freshmen Kiryk Mozeleski and Paris Brown.

The Vultures defense was dominant with strong performances from Carson Nye, Jack Kelly and Mason Rice as well as goalie Duncan McMillan. All helped shut down most of the North Kitsap attack.

On Saturday, March 26, the Vultures hosted Olympia, a brand new club to the league. The difference in team experience showed, as Vashon came away with a 19-0 victory. Carleton and Mozeleski led the scoring for the Vultures with four goals each; Shira contributed three goals and three assists; Dawit Tuller-Ross and St. Germain had two goals; and freshmen Calvin McMillan, Brown and Jake Carman each contributed a goal. Defensively, the ball rarely made its way into the Vultures’ defensive half of the field, and when it did, the backline was up to the task of regaining possession.

The Vashon teens find themselves tied for first in their league with Klahowya; both teams are 4-0 in the conference.

As it stands, Vashon has scored 59 goals and allowed 15, while Klahowya has scored 72 and allowed 31. Vashon’s sophomore goalie McMillan has a 61 percent save rate compared to a 57 percent save rate for Klahowya, according to sportability.com. But the domination in the games comes from face-offs, where new lacrosse player Kellan Riley is providing a spark. He has been winning more than 90 percent of the face-offs, which gives the opponent no chance to get their hands on the ball.

The high school team played Narrows League-leading Peninsula on Tuesday after press time. The team will then take on North Kitsap at 6 p.m. Thursday at home.

In other lacrosse news, the third- and fourth-grade team, under coach Scott Rice, is also having a good season. Parent coordinator Amy Nielsen said that strong teamwork is standing out.

“Aggressive, physical play defines their style with the ability to score quickly at any point in the game,” Nielsen said. “They are really beginning to understand how to possess the ball and control the offensive side of the ball.”

The team is off to a 3-1 record with the only loss being a one-point squeaker.

Colin McIntyre is leading the scoring from midfield and rookies Olin Nielsen and Orion Knowler have learned the game quickly and provided solid contributions.

The fifth- and sixth-grade team has also had a similar start despite coming off a 0-10 season last year due to league placement in a division with much larger clubs and teams.

This year, the team has started off at two wins, a tie and a loss. Goalie Ben Larson had 27 saves in one game last Saturday.

The seventh- and eighth- grade team is in a “rebuilding season,” having lost a huge squad to the high school-age team. Coach Doug McClure left no stone unturned to put together a team that is made up of a well-rounded group of athletes. Mitchell Nye — younger brother to high school junior Carson Nye — must have honed some defensive skills as he made 21 saves during the season opening game last week against perennial powerhouse Lake Tapps.

The team went on to lose 4-2.
