After a strong start to the season, the girls' tennis team traveled to Charles Wright with a 2-0 record.

After a strong start to the season, the girls’ tennis team traveled to Charles Wright with a 2-0 record.

Charles Wright is traditionally a strong team and promised to be a good test for the Pirates. Vashon fell to the Tacoma opponent 5-0, but most matches were close, and the team Vashon showed they can compete with stronger schools.

The following week the team had home matches against Bush and Lincoln high schools. These non-league matches gave Coach Brougham a chance to try some new combinations and line ups.

The Pirates’ meeting with Bush was an enjoyable match, and the Pirates varsity prevailed 5-0. Taryn Mulvihill and Emmaline Wittwer had nice wins at #1 and 2 singles. Wittwer, playing her first singles match of the season, made some excellent adjustments midway through her match to take a nice win. The doubles teams all had strong wins with Hanna Nelson and Yulia Fiala at #1 doubles, Sierra Richter and Becca Lematua at #2 and Lizzie Maciejewski and Tobin Vaughn at #3.

Bush did not bring a lot of JV teams, but the Pirate JV members who played all got nice wins and some valuable playing time.

On Friday, Lincoln high school visited Vashon. Lincoln is a 4A school and brought almost 40 players, making for a long, busy day of matches.

Mulvihill got the Pirates off to a great start at #1 singles with a straight sets win. All three doubles matches were close and hard fought with Emmaline Wittwer / Lizzie Maciejewski at #1 doubles losing a close two-set match. Yulia Fiala and Hannah Nelson then lost a tough two-set match, and finally Tobin Vaughn and Peytra Gard lost in three hard sets. The match of the day was undoubtedly #2 singles, where Sierra Richter, playing her first singles match of the year, lost a grueling three-set match. Even though she eventually lost 7-5 in the third set, she put up a great fight against a tough opponent. This match was the first to start and was still finishing when all other matches, including the JVs were long finished The JVs had a lot of matches and basically split results with a deep and strong Lincoln team.

After splitting results with Bush and Lincoln, the Pirates record stands at 3-2. This week the Pirates had a home match on Tuesday against NW Christian then travel to Puyallup and Emerald Ridge on Wednesday and Thursday and to the University of Washington to watch a college match on Friday, making for a busy week before spring break.
