Island rowers of all ages compete in Eugene

On Saturday, April 9, the Vashon Island Rowing Club traveled to Eugene, Ore. to compete in the Covered Bridge Regatta, an event attended by junior, collegiate and master rowers from 33 teams in Washington, Oregon and California.

On Saturday, April 9, the Vashon Island Rowing Club traveled to Eugene, Ore. to compete in the Covered Bridge Regatta, an event attended by junior, collegiate and master rowers from 33 teams in Washington, Oregon and California.

The day started off with a win, as the men’s junior JV four, consisting of Tim Hanson, Ryan Bingham, Baxter Call, Ky Burton and coxswain Sarah Warner took first place. Bingham and Hanson went back out to earn another first place medal in the junior men’s varsity double.  

The junior women’s varsity four, with Tera Jane Ripley, Charlotte Kehoe, Ella McConnell, Katelyn Carter and coxswain Olivia Sayvetz, finished fourth. 

The junior men’s varsity quad, with Gus Magnuson Tate Gill, Isaiah Mosser-Rohe, Ky Burton and coxswain Sarah Warner finished second in a tight race just 29 hundredths of a second behind the winning boat. 

The women’s junior varsity quad with Alaina Williams, Emmie Kehoe, Mia Croonquist, Avalon Koenig, and coxswain Olivia Sayvetz crossed the finish line first with an impressive time of 7:26, which was  26 seconds in front of the second place boat.

Vashon’s masters team also competed at regatta. Kim Goforth, Holly Zapel Su DeWalt and Lisa Huggenvik earned third place in the master’s women’s quad. Jim Hauser, Gary Schoch, Steve Haworth, Ed Zapel and coxswain Sayvetz finished first place in the men’s four. 

Vashon ended the day the same as it started, with a first place win going to the masters mixed eight, with Su DeWalt, Steve Full, Holly Zapel, Kim Goforth, Jeff Hoyt, Eric Gill, John Jannetty, Lisa Huggenvik and coxswain Sarah Warner.

Next up, the junior crew will travel to Canada Thursday, April 28 through Saturday, May 1 for the Brentwood Regatta.
