Addie Davis, a junior at Vashon High School, has earned a position on the Washington State High School Rodeo Team and will be traveling to two prestigious rodeo events in July. First, as a top 10 finalist in the state, she is competing in barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying and breakaway roping at the Silver State International Rodeo in Fallon, Nev., July 4 to 8, a rodeo that includes more than 1,500 contestants.
She then heads to New Mexico for the world’s largest rodeo, the 61st annual National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSFR), to compete in the cutting competition July 19 to 25.
In addition to competing for more than $200,000 in prizes, NHSFR contestants will also vie for scholarships and the chance to be named the National High School Rodeo Champion.
Davis has also qualified — in barrel racing, pole bending and stake race — for the American Quarter Horse World Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla., July 31 to Aug. 9.
She competes locally in the Washington State High School Rodeo Association and the Northwest Junior Rodeo Association. In the past year, Davis has traveled more than 15,000 miles, representing Vashon Island and Washington state, and competed in more than 50 rodeo events. High School Rodeo competitors receive no state or local funding and must absorb all expenses personally.
